Young Reds tame Cubs

REDS relied on their quick legs to race away with a 6-4 victory over Cubs in their Cairns Baseball League match on Sunday.

There was little separating the teams for much of the match with the pitchers dominating at Centennial Park.

But Reds had the advantage of a raft of young runners who took advantage of every slip from Cubs.

Centre field Scott Webb had the only safe hit for Cubs.

"There were only a couple of hits, most of the runs were generated off walks and then the runners just basically going around on pass balls," Webb said.

"I think it was quite even but I think Reds, probably their base running was a bit better than ours and they got a few extra runs by doing so.

"They have got a lot of guys around the 18 to 20 years old bracket and are an upcoming team that will be one to watch in the next couple of years.

Reds pitchers Matt Holmes and Kieran Warnock were dominant on the mound, drawing praise from Webb.

Jason Scammell had 10 strike-outs in six innings for Cubs.

"Ten strike-outs for a two-hour game is very, very good.

In Sunday’s other game Shogun Heat smashed Shogun Black 11-1 to maintain top spot on the ladder.
