Unique: Visitors have the chance to see platypuses at the Tarzali Lakes Aquaculture Centre, southwest of Cairns.

Platypus tours feature in new plans for the Tarzali Lakes Aquaculture Centre, southwest of Cairns.

The complex reopens on Saturday, and is on the Millaa Millaa-Malanda road on the Atherton Tableland, within easy reach of Cairns city.

The platypus lake is one of the centre’s highlights and offers visitors a chance to see the elusive, uniquely Australian creature.

The Tarzali Lakes Aquaculture Centre also features a smokehouse run by master butcher Dave Hoffman, specialising in kangaroo and buffalo meat, redclaw and fish including smoked eel, a favourite with Chinese visitors.

Visitors can dine on a range of exotic Asian flavours in the cafe, including delicacies such as Tom Yum redclaw from Thailand.

Co-owner Paul Kramer said the centre was a must for keen fishers.

“We are hoping to generate about 50 tonnes of fish annually in the next few years,” he said.

The centre’s educational aquaculture tours are designed to suit the whole family, with the reopening coming just in time to entertain the kids for the school holidays.

The reopened Tarzali Lakes Aquaculture Centre joins a host of other Cairns region tourist attractions, with a range of animal experiences, cultural activities, natural attractions and fine dining among the highlights.
