CAIRNS has dominated the North Queensland junior rugby league championships.

Cairns won three of the four age groups as the Far North again underlined its outstanding pool of junior talent.

The cream of Far North Queensland’s rugby league talent headed to the Innisfail tournament as representatives of the Eacham, Innisfail and Cairns junior leagues.

Cairns lost just one of its 20 matches during the tournament to win the under-14, under-15 and under-16 titles and finish runners-up in the under-13 division to Townsville.

"They were fantastic," Cairns District Junior Rugby League general manager David Maiden said.

"Our Cairns boys really lifted a notch which was a credit to them and our coaching staff who do a lot of voluntary work."

Cairns did not have things all its own way though, facing a tough battle against runner-up Innisfail in the under-15s and Townsville and Innisfail in the under-16s.

Maiden said the standard of play was relatively high across the 60 games played over the weekend.

"I have to applaud John Preece and his committee down there," he said of the Innisfail organisers.

The CDJRL’s base at Mann St will host the state under-13 and under-14 titles from July 7-11, with the Northern region teams named from the carnival competing against the best in the state.

The July state carnival is now held only for the younger age groups with the under-15s covered by a Queensland schools carnival and under-16s playing a selection event earlier in the season.
