Experience the theatrical intensity and heightened reality of a good gothic story, in a spine-chilling new Australian play, Tiptoe, set to thrill audiences in July at the JUTE Theatre.

Tiptoe by North Queensland playwright Michael Beresford will premiere on 4 July 2008 in a major opening night event celebrating this new regional work, described by the director as a ‘psychic detective story’.

Like the award-winning JUTE production Constance Drinkwater and the Final Days of Somerset in 2007, Tiptoe has the intriguing elements of a juicy gothic tale – a haunting setting, heightened emotions, a terrible secret and a touch of the supernatural.

Tiptoe is the story of a young Brisbane artist who travels to the Queensland town of Charters Towers to discover her past.  She finds that the answers she needs are locked within a secret that three formidable old women have spent their lifetimes guarding.

The play is the story of what happens when the women’s iron wills are matched by a girl who is driven to find out the truth, at any cost.

Even though the story is menacing, the actors’ performances are theatrical and comedic in their representations of the three old ladies who are keeping a dark secret under their aprons.

Gathering around the card table for their weekly canasta games, they are more like underbelly characters plotting a hit than respectable old ladies, despite their hairnets and orthopaedic shoes.

Tiptoe will be performed at JUTE Theatre from Friday, July 4 to Saturday, July 19. Advanced tickets are available from Ticketlink on 4031 9555.
