Dragons plan giant-killing effort
DOUGLAS faces its version of Mission Impossible tonight when it takes on reigning FNQ Football men's premier league soccer champions Marlin Coast at Trinity Beach.
Sitting at the bottom of the premiership ladder, with just the one premiership point and having scored just four goals while conceding 41, the Dragons stand out for all the wrong reasons in an otherwise tight competition.
However, Douglas coach Doug Baird said despite the enormity of tonight’s task and a thus far winless season, spirits within the Dragons’ ranks remained high.
He said the team took a positive approach to every game despite having had little time together as the Dragons undergo another seemingly inevitable rebuild.
"The boys certainly enjoy each other’s company," he said. "We’ve had to generate a good team spirit in a short amount of time."
Baird said the team had improved some facets of its game but its efforts on the training paddock were stifled by the large number of players working in the hospitality and tourist industries.
Baird said experienced trio Ian Mulcahy, Nick Tither and Gavin Jenkin had proved valuable as he sought to shape the side with Tither’s return from New Zealand last month providing a boost to the Dragons.
However, the Dragons will have to pull out something special to overcome a Rangers side which, has since strung together six wins and a draw and defeated Douglas 3-0 in April.
