Let meow-t of here
IT'S been a long two-and-a-half weeks for Smokey the cat.
This 18-month-old tabby was stuck in the wall cavity, between the laundry and bathroom of a new house in White Rock, from about June 14.
Smokey finally regained his freedom yesterday when he was rescued by builders who heard his cries and cut the wall open.
His owners, Kris Ward and Janelle Lewis, were shocked but relieved when their cat was found safe and surprisingly well, just two houses away.
The couple had only recently moved into their newly built house at White Rock when Smokey went missing.
"We went away for a night to a wedding and he (Smokey) hadn’t come home to eat," Ms Lewis said.
"We thought it was very strange because he eats a lot."
Ms Lewis said she and her partner searched the neighbourhood, put up posters and even looked down drains to find their beloved pet.
"As horrible as it was, after two weeks we’d pretty much given up on him," she said.
However, Mr Ward said he thought his cat was "destined for something like this". "He’s always up to mischief, climbing into cupboards and that sort of thing.
"He must have been eating bugs to keep him going for so long."
Mr Ward’s mother Diane Ward works at Earlville Veterinary Surgery, where Smokey was taken by one of the couple’s neighbours after the rescue.
"He’s a little bit dehydrated, but other than that, he’s fine," Ms Ward said.
"His heart was racing when they brought him in, and he’s got quite an appetite."
Ms Ward said Smokey was discovered when builders stopped for lunch yesterday and heard the cat meowing from inside the wall.
"They gave him some roast beef from their sandwiches when they got him out," she said.
