CAIRNS basketballers continue to make their mark on the elite game, with several Far Northern teens to take part in the national titles during the school holidays.

Eight Cairns players were named in the Queensland North under-16 and under-18 teams after the Basketball Queensland state classics and will compete against the country’s best at national championships in Western Australia and Victoria.

The region has a glut of talent in the under-16 division, with four players – Andrew Brown, Connie Finlay, Teyla Evans and Kate McNeil – making the boys’ and girls’ teams for next week’s titles in Perth.

Andrew Foster was named as a shadow player for the boys’ team, while the depth in the girls’ ranks was underlined with Alena Broesder, Tash Clark, Chelsea Corcoran and Bryanni Perks named as shadows to add to the three picked in the main squad.

The Queensland North under-18s head to their titles in Ballarat this week, with competition starting on July 5.

Nicole Cameron is Cairns’ representative in the women’s side, with Karlie Brown named as a shadow.

Michael Chitham, Geoffrey Walsh and Jeromie Hill have made the men’s side.

The region’s up and coming basketballers will also be on court, with Cairns and Mulgrave sending sides to the under-12 and under-14 state classics in Brisbane.

The under-12s are in action this week, with the under-14s taking to the court at the weekend for their championships from July 7-11.
