this month Cairns Art Society is hosting the annual and very popular ARTescape for the third time.

ARTescape is once again being held at Tanks Arts Centre in the Flecker Botanic Gardens from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18.

The past year has featured some improvements to the venue with better lighting and more parking. This year the themes are wildlife and botanical, and there will also be the previously popular portraits and landscape topics.

ARTescape ’08 focuses on the techniques and excellence of wildlife and botanical art subjects as well as the mechanics of mainstream art practice.

As with previous years the botanic gardens lends itself to the influences of the natural realm, and is ideal for inspiring the inner artist.

Accordingly, birds, plants, flowers and landscapes will be high-profile themes in the workshops, right alongside traditional portraits and contemporary abstracts.

The event has been organised for anyone interested in the arts and living in the Far North.

Most teachers are taking beginners and will provide a great opportunity for locals to see Australia’s best art tutors first hand.

Once again, top-line instructors will be present including: Colley Whisson (oils), Suzanne Warwick (portraits), Malcolm Beattie (watercolour), Ev Hales (watercolour), Peter Griffen (abstracts), Gary Duncan (landscapes), Paul Margoscy (birds), Claire Souter (plants), Sandra Temple (wildlife), Colina Grant (pastels) and Michael Ferris (flowers).

Renowned local painter Greg Dwyer will also join the tutorial team. The past couple of years have been very successful with students coming from every state in Australia and New Zealand.

The popularity of the event can be attributed to the high calibre of tutors and the conducive environment offered by Tanks.

"It’s a brilliant atmosphere, 100 or so keen students all with such enthusiasm for their art. It’s a real buzz," event co-ordinator Michael Ferris says.

"Our members look forward to it and this year we’ve even got our president as a student."

ARTescape takes place at Tanks Arts Centre from Monday, July 14 to Friday, July 18. For details phone Michael Ferris on 4055 2544 or go to www.cairnsartsociety.com
