MP flees to escape media

EMBATTLED politicians Belinda Neal and John Della Bosca have hightailed it to the Far North, seeking a refuge from the "Iguanagate" scandal.

The Labor couple was spotted having lunch with their two kids in the Smithfield Centre food court yesterday afternoon but left as soon as The Cairns Post arrived.

They got in a car and drove north along the Captain Cook Highway, heading towards the tourist hot spots of Palm Cove and Port Douglas.

"We'd like our privacy respected," was all Ms Neal, the Federal MP for the NSW seat of Robertson, would tell The Cairns Post.

Ms Neal and her New South Wales parliamentarian husband, Mr Della Bosca, are at the centre of a political storm after an incident at Iguana’s nightclub in NSW.

It is alleged they verbally abused staff and there have been claims of an attempted cover-up.

Leichhardt MP Jim Turnour was unaware his Labor brethren were in town but wished them a good time.

"I expect people want to come here to get a break from a difficult situation," Mr Turnour said.

"I have no plans to catch up with (Ms Neal) but hope she has a good time here."

Federal parliament is in winter recess.
