When I was a child in Southern China I discovered the romantic poetry of Li Bai, a very famous Chinese poet.

One poem in particular made me dream; it described a place where the ocean embraces the land.

Growing up in a busy Chinese city this vision of a peaceful place where the ocean caresses the land with its warm waters remained but a dream … until I discovered Cairns.

When I discovered Cairns and the stunning natural beauty that surrounds it I was immediately enchanted, even mesmerized.

The poetry of my childhood flooded my mind and I felt like a new person.

Once the initial excitement had subsided I discovered more hidden treasures. There was more than the breathtaking sites.

I discovered the museum, an excellent gateway to the region’s rich past where the Aboriginal expert, George Skeene, patiently explained to me the Aboriginal past of the place.

With the assistance of the friendly members of the historical society I discovered the Chinese history of the region.

I found even a book written by a Chinese merchant who had travelled to Cooktown from my home-region in the late 19th century.

My dedicated teacher and expert guide, Mr. Froemmcke, took me with my family to the Cairns Highlands where I discovered near Atherton a further surprising witness of Chinese culture in Far North Queensland, the Hou Wang Temple with its Chinese museum.

After descending the Gilles Range with its spectacular views Mr Froemmcke took us to Innisfail where we visited a Chinese Buddhist Temple within walking distance from the town’s heart.

And when the Chinese Year of the Rat started I was delighted to realise that is also celebrated in Cairns.

I have also discovered the rich local culture, especially the vibrant art scene and the city’s fantastic Tanks Art Centre in its lush tropical environment.

I can only say that, in more than one way, Cairns is a revelation and coming here has changed my life.

Cairns and its surroundings are a tropical cocktail of natural beauty and inspiration.

So deep has my attachment grown that now I want to settle here permanently.
