Dynamic Drumming
Wala performs at Cairns Civic Theatre this Saturday, July 12 from 8pm.
An exciting and upbeat West African percussion and dance group spends time in Far North Queensland this weekend.
Wala gives a high-energy and dynamic performance capturing the spirit and essence of Ghanaian culture.
Wala means "life" in the local language of the members’ home town of Nungua, and the suitability of this name becomes clear as you experience them in action – loving and celebrating life through music.
The group is a stunning sight, surrounded by about 20 drums played with hands, feet and sticks, bells, shakers, and explosive dance presentations.
They bring their instruments to life as they share a mix of traditional Ghanaian music and dance depicting the stories and rich heritage of their ancestors, blended with their own compositions.
Lovers of African drumming and dance will be excited to know that on Sunday, in association with local drumming organisation, Drum Up Big, members of Wala will teach a drumming workshop and a dance workshop.
Learn the Ghanaian celebratory rhythm, Guume, and the dance that goes with it. Live drumming will accompany the dance class. Class times are 10am-11.30am for drumming and noon-1.30pm for dance.
Cost of participation is $25 a class or $45 for both classes. Drums are available for hire for $5. Please register your interest with Tara at drumupbig@hotmail.com
