Still call it home
What a catch: Phillip Breslin (far right) and his mates with a big catch on the reef off Cairns.
Phillip Breslin may be located in Brisbane for work, but he always calls Cairns home.
Ever been on a holiday and just looked forward to being home?
Even if the trip has been fun and enjoyable, the feeling of being back relaxes your whole being.
That is how it is for me living in North Queensland. Australia is an amazing place with it’s diversities of climate, landscape, plants and animals and of course people.
However up here in the north we have the pick of it. The natural beauty of the rainforest that blankets the Great Dividing Range is as unique in the world as its inhabitants.
When exploring these magical places you feel as though you could be an early explorer venturing into untouched wilderness.
Crystal clear rivers and mountainous streams teaming with fish, misty gorges that echo the songs of endemic birds, insects and animals as colourful and wild as the skies above them, and being able to be a part of it is just amazing.
It’s the feeling of adventure so easily found here that I love.
And the adventure doesn’t end when you step from the rainforests.
The beaches that line our coast are beautiful and invite you into the warm waters to discover one of the wonders of nature, the Great Barrier Reef.
The reef truly is spectacular.
Millions come from all around the world to marvel at this underwater Garden of Eden.
If all this sounds like you than Cairns my friend is for you.
Cairns possess all the conveniences and mod cons of a large city but successfully manages to escape all the niggling hassles and stresses that come with living in one.
Cairns is Queensland’s most northern city and gateway to Cape York Australia, with direct access to some of the worlds most pristine national parks, sport fishing and camping this city has a lot to offer people from all corners of the world.
I myself grew up in cairns and loved every minute of it!
I have seen and done things that many people wouldn’t even know existed in Queensland let alone Australia.
Unfortunately I left cairns just over a year ago to pursue my Teaching career in Brisbane; but please don’t be mistaken I may have left, but believe me I am far from gone!
Just because I am temporarily working here in Brisbane I still call Cairns home.
My students will often ask me where I live and where I come from and being a True FNQ boy I have no hesitation in telling them that I may be paying rent here in Brisbane but a large part of me still lives in Cairns, Far North Queensland.
I think we have been told some stage that we never really appreciate something until it’s gone and this cannot more true when talking about Cairns far north Queensland.
There is an old saying, “Relax its Queensland”, and I’m convinced that everyone that grows up here automatically has that mentality.
I know Townsville very well may be the capital of Far North Queensland buts it’s the illustrious Cairns that draws people to the north.
Don’t get me wrong I love Townsville but only because I know I am only 4 hours away from cairns while driving home.
When I arrive everyone is so easy going and friendly, willing to help one another in times of need.
This spirit of community is not always that easy to find these days but in any town in the far north it’s obvious.
Great adventures can be had every day up here, there is so much to see and do.
Ask anyone in the street and they’ll tell you that this is a special place.
Some refer to it as God’s own and it’s not had to see why.
