THE race is on for a shot at stardom in timeOUT's Battle of the Bands competition.
The winning band will open the timeOUT concert at Cairns Showground on August 30 featuring three big Australian acts - Faker, Kisschasy and Blue King Brown and Kiwi rapper Scribe.
Cairns indie rock group The Medics have entered the competition for the second time and the band's guitarist Andrew Thomson hopes another year of playing and recording together can land them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"It would be great to play in front of heaps of people and get the exposure we normally wouldn't get playing at smaller gigs," he said.
"It could also open the door for interstate gigs."
Previous winners Sleeping In Trains and The Venus Battery have capitalised on their exposure scoring more gigs in and out of Cairns with the former even recording two EPs and appearing on ABC Television's jtv program last year.
Popular venue Gilligan's will again host the contest, pitting the best local musicians against each other over three heats and a final, starting with Heat 1 on July 20.
