A compelling read
The Trouble with Alex: A Child Too Damaged to Love by Melanie Allen (Simon & Schuster)
Anyone who’s read Lionel Shriver's haunting We Need to Talk About Kevin will be instantly drawn to this book – its cover is emblazoned with Shriver's praise, and compares the fictional bestseller to Melanie Allen's true, heartfelt, cry for help.
Alex, her charming adopted daughter, was deeply scarred from early childhood neglect. But Alex was able to hide her serious emotional and behavioural problems from all but those closest to her.
Melanie details her frustration in trying to gain a correct diagnosis for her daughter; of her futile attempts to convince the experts of Alex's complex problems; and of being accused of being an abusive parent herself.
The story she shares is thought-provoking, sad, sometimes frightening and frequently infuriating.
It will leave you still wondering what will become of this disturbed little girl and Melanie's family.
Verdict: Won’t outsell Shriver but still a compelling read for anyone, especially for those with an interest in kids or mental health.
