Minus Penny compete in heat one of timeOUT’s Battle Of The Bands this Sunday, July 20 from 5pm at Gilligan’s.

The first heat of timeOUT's Battle Of The Bands kicks off this Sunday at Gilligan's.

Six quality local bands are the first lucky contestants for heat one of the timeOUT Battle Of The Bands contest to be held at Gilligan’s this Sunday from 5pm.

Minus Penny (pictured) have made their mark as an up-and-coming local punk rock band over the past few years.

Formed in Cairns in late 2006, Minus Penny soon began playing shows and writing original music.

After slogging it out at high school after-parties, then making their way into the Cairns club scene, Minus Penny began to make a name for themselves with the recording of their first EP, Far From Forgotten Fires.

The quartet, made up of Campbell Will, Liam Selsby, Matthew Thomas and Alex Dedecius, have now released their debut album Less Rest For The Restless.

Next up are The Coils, a rock band from the Daintree who once supported Troy Cassar-Daley at the Mossman Music Festival and have released an album recorded and mixed by solar power.

The other four bands competing in the heat are Polymantra, Epica, Stev White and his Bucket of Blood and One Eye Deer.

Each band has three songs with which to impress the independent judging panel, who will then decide the heat winners.

The two top bands from Sunday will head to the final to be held at Gilligan’s on Friday, August 8.

The overall winner of timeOUT’s Battle Of The Bands will open the timeOUT concert on Saturday, August 30 at Cairns Showgrounds.
