Some talented young Queenslanders are about to impress you with their dedication and ability.

The Queensland Youth Orchestra (QY ) comes to perform at Cairns Civic Theatre this Saturday, in a free concert brought to you by Cairns Regional Council.

Based in Brisbane, Australia, QYO is a world-class youth orchestra organisation providing an annual program of rehearsals, tutorials, music camps, concerts and tours for musicians aged from nine to 26.

More than 500 musicians in eight orchestras perform more than 60 concerts throughout Queensland each year.

QYO is the state’s major orchestral training and performance organisation for young musicians aged 10 to 23.

Under the artistic leadership of John Curro AM MBE since 1966, QYO is renowned as a world-class youth orchestra organisation.

QYO currently has eight ensembles: three symphony orchestras, two concert bands, a junior string orchestra, a chamber orchestra and a big band.

One of QYO’s conductors is Dr Peter Morris who was appointed conductor of the QYO Wind Symphony in January 2007. He is also the music director at Villanova College in Brisbane.

Peter has held university teaching positions in America at UCLA, the University of Houston and Colorado State University, where he conducted instrumental ensembles, taught courses in instrumental conducting, brass and music education, and lectured in music business and entertainment management.

He currently lectures in instrumental conducting at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and assists with their post-graduate conductors.

Peter has performed internationally on trumpet in a wide variety of genres from Baroque orchestras to commercial session work in Los Angeles.
