Olympic gold hedged on training, good luck

IF Australian archer Sky Kim was any more relaxed about going to the Beijing Olympics you would have to check for a pulse to make sure he was human.

The 25-year-old and his four Australian teammates flew into Cairns earlier this week for a training camp at Barlow Park.

Kim, a Korean national champion before moving to Australia in 2005, is considered a genuine medal prospect but if he is feeling any nerves ahead of his first Olympics he is hiding them well.

With an easy smile and hearty laugh, Kim reckons he knows what to expect at arguably the world’s biggest sporting event.

"I think it will be fun," he said.

"I’m definitely confident. I’m very excited for the Olympics.

"I want to get the gold. If I have some good luck I might get. If I have bad luck I might not."

Fortune has favoured Kim in the past. At last year’s Beijing Archery Test Event, he won a marathon single arrow shoot to claim gold.

While winning at the Olympic venue boosted his confidence, Kim said finishing first at Beijing would be far harder.

"The test event is not the real Olympics," he said.

"At the Olympics there are a lot more people watching you. I think it is a lot different but I think I can still do okay."

The one thing Kim is sure of is that Cairns’ winter climate is more attractive than the weather in Canberra this time of year.

Kim, who is based at the Australian Institute of Sport, said he loved the warmth of the Far North.

"It’s so cold there (Canberra) I can’t get any feeling in my fingers and it hurts," he said.

"I like it here much better."
