Part of ear bitten off
DURING a weekend of violence in Cairns, a man's ear was partially bitten off, while a Mt Sheridan man ended up on life support after allegedly being bashed at a Bentley Park sporting club.
Police are warning against spontaneous violence following a weekend, which also included a senior policeman being injured during an arrest.
In the most serious incident, a man, 35, was knocked unconscious during an altercation with two brothers at Fretwell Park about 11.50pm on Saturday.
He was in a critical condition in Cairns Base Hospital.
The brothers, aged 23 and 25, will appear in Cairns Magistrates’ Court this morning each charged with grievous bodily harm.
Police allege that a fight erupted between the older sibling, from Bentley Park, and the man at the sporting club’s bar.
The younger brother, from North Cairns, allegedly joined in later.
In an unrelated incident, a Manoora man, 26, was taken to hospital after part of his right ear was allegedly bitten off during a fight in the CBD about 6am yesterday.
Police later found the severed ear near the intersection of Shields and Abbott streets and took it to hospital. A crime scene was cordoned off where the stoush occurred.
A Parramatta Park man, 24, has been charged with grievous bodily harm and will appear in court next month.
Cairns CIB acting Det Sen-Sgt Jason Chetham said the charges arising from both incidents were serious and warned that a mere momentary loss of control could come at a devastating cost.
"Obviously, events can happen quickly and the consequences can be extreme for all parties concerned," he said.
"We implore people to stop using the violence they are towards each other.
"The victims have suffered significant injuries and those alleged to have committed them may face lengthy custodial sentences."
Cooktown officer-in-charge Sgt John McArthur was allegedly assaulted about 7pm on Saturday.
A man, 19, allegedly kicked the cage door of a police four-wheel-drive into the officer's head, causing a 2cm cut above his left eye.
Sgt McArthur was treated at Cooktown Hospital.
The prisoner was charged with serious assault on police and will appear in Cooktown Magistrates' Court later this month.
Last week, two juveniles were charged with the violent mugging of a man at Rydges Plaza car park.
The pair, aged 15 and 16, will face Cairns Children’s Court tomorrow, each charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in company, attempted robbery and stealing.
