Peninsula shines
THE Peninsula boys' and girls' hockey teams have made impressive starts to the 12-years- and-under state hockey championships in Cairns.
The boys took time to find their rhythm on Saturday and had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Sunshine Coast in their first match.
Goalkeeper Zygi Holmes was the star with several great saves while Nathan Parise also impressed with some strong runs on the wing.

Peninsula then suffered a 2-0 loss to South Coast before fighting back with an impressive 3-3 draw with Metropolitan North.
Michael Trott was impressive against South Coast while Bradley Broer was strong at fullback. The draw against Met North was impressive given the southern powerhouse has won its five other games.
Peninsula started yesterday with a 3-0 win over rival Northern.
Tom Edwards scored two goals off penalty corners while Parise scored from a field goal.
The win was followed by a 1-0 loss to Capricornia, one of the favourites to win the tournament.
Holmes made some great saves while Damon Gordon-Moore’s fantastic workrate impressed spectators.
The boys finished the day with a convincing 6-1 victory over Wide Bay.
The boys dominated open play with Gordon-Moore hitting two field goals and Tom Edwards, Jack Ward, Connor Evans and Zac Jackson also chipping in with goals.
The girls started their campaign with a 3-0 win over Sunshine Coast.
Shannaiya Fearns-Tatipata, Shannyl Cristante and Cassandra Smith scored the goals with Hannah Whalan making some great saves around the goal circle.
The girls then beat Darling Downs 3-2 with Fearns-Tatipata, Cristante and Ashley Krilley scoring and Holly Toshach impressive in defence.
Yesterday, the girls opened with a 4-1 loss to Met North, with Cristante scoring. Smith and Leigh Thomas were also impressive. The girls suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Met East with a goal scored in the final minute.
A 1-0 loss to Northern followed with several chances missed.
Whalan and Chloe Fegatilli were impressive for Peninsula.
The championships finish tomorrow.
