Luxury: Port Douglas is one of the jewels of Far North Queensland.

Luxury: Port Douglas is one of the jewels of Far North Queensland.

Port Douglas is one of the region's premier luxury tourist destinations and has some of the most sought-after real estate as well.

Port Douglas is one of the region's most popular tourist destinations, with a selection of high-class luxury hotels, resorts, restaurants and boutique stores.

The sleepy town has become a favourite haunt for the rich and famous trying to escape the public eye while visiting Far North Queensland, with supermodels, US presidents and movie stars all finding their way to Port.

This doesn't mean its off limits for everyone else either - the relaxed atmosphere and cruisy local people make the town a must-see when visiting the Cairns region.

The popular Sunday markets are a perfect place to pick up local arts, crafts and produce, with people travelling from throughout the whole region to display their wares.

The shopping is also a highlight, with many designer brands and gift shops dotted the length of Macrossan Street, the hub of the town.

Four Mile Beach, which runs the entire the length of Port Douglas, is a perfect spot for a morning stroll and remains largely quiet even when tourist numbers are high in the peak season.

The town is also the gateway to many of the regions natural attractions, with the Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef and Mossman Gorge all within minutes of the town.

So when you are travelling to the north, don't leave Port Douglas off your itinery, you'll be dissapointed that you missed one of the region's best and most popular destinations.
