The new FG Ford Falcon is in Cairns.

AFTER driving the new FG Ford Falcon around Cairns last weekend I know there's still life in the old dog yet.

By old dog I mean big Aussie sixes, the mainstay of Australian motoring for decades.

Large cars are doing it tough but Ford, Holden and Toyota still make some of the best big cars in the world.

In many ways they are ideal for travelling long distances which hundreds of thousands of Australians are doing regularly.

They are big, comfortable, quiet and relatively fuel efficient for the task they are performing.

There's nothing better than a lazy Aussie six to get you to your destination feeling fresh and relaxed.

While many are deserting the large car segment for SUVs and big four cylinder medium cars, a lot of it has to do with perception.

Many think it's not politically and environmentally correct to be seen in a Falcon, Commodore or Aurion. So they downsize to a medium sized four or SUV.

But consider this. Loaded up with four people or more with their gear these vehicles will use as much, if not more fuel, than the big six cylinder car.

Then there are safety issues like overtaking. A good six cylinder (and one with a turbocharger too) can pull out, pass and get back on the correct and safe side of the road quickly.

But in an SUV or a big four you need more time, a longer stretch of road and careful planning.

As well, they can struggle up hills while the lazy six takes it all in its stride.

While the Aussie six may be out of favour in the city, it's still the best vehicle for those who drive in the countryside and in regional areas where traffic congestion is not that much of a problem.
