CEC nominated for award
CAIRNS building company CEC Constructions has been nominated as a finalist in the 'Earth Awards' for Excellence in Civil Construction.
As part of the Natural Aboriginal Health Strategy, CEC has built reticulated sewerage to the indigenous township of Prompuraaw.
The sewerage replaces outdated septic tanks which flood during the monsoons leaving contaminated water to pond for almost four months of the year.
The 'Earth Awards', awarded by the industry body Civil Contractors Federation (QLD) are for major infrastructure projects.
CEC is a finalist in category 3 ($5million - $20 million projects).
The company battled Cyclone Monica, a remote location and monsoonal rain.
CEC spokesman Andrew Griffiths said they were proud to have been nominated.
"CEC Constructions do a lot of major projects in geographically isolated parts of North Queensland,'' he said.
"Combine this with the weather extremes that we have to manage and clearly we have developed a range of very specialised construction skills over the last 30 years.
"To be acknowledged in the form of a nomination for this award is certainly something that we are proud of.''
Mr Griffiths said the project had several challenges.
"Due to the landscape we had to source a specialist all-terrain concrete mixing vehicle from Italy,'' he said.
"Clearly not something done easily but we managed. We feel that finding solutions for challenges like this is what gives the CEC Group overall the commercial edge.''
The award winners will be announced on Friday night in Brisbane.
