GUN Peninsula boys player Sam Watson was the region's only state selection after the 12-years-and-under state hockey championship finished in Cairns yesterday.

Watson gained selection after the Peninsula boys completed their championship campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Darling Downs yesterday, leaving them in fourth spot overall in a congested competition.

Teammate Jayden Gil was unlucky not to join Watson, being named a shadow selection for the Queensland primary schoolboys team which will contest the Pacific Games in Canberra from December 7-14.

Also close to securing a state berth was Peninsula girls' star Shannaiya Ferns-Tatipata, who was named a shadow for the Queensland primary schoolgirls outfit after posting six goals for the championship.

Tom Edwards posted the winning goal in yesterday's Peninsula boys' encounter in the 47th minute, showcasing the skills which had helped him to repeatedly break into opposition circles throughout the tournament.

Also in good form was Gil, Jack Ward, Garrett Dunstan and Jacob Raymond.

Peninsula girls finished with a 1-0 loss to South Coast, leaving them in equal eighth spot, despite strong performances from Ferns-Tatipata, Malindi Trehearn, Ashley Crilley, Cadie Duncan and Shannyl Cristante.

The team also missed the services of key player Ella Cosic, who played strongly throughout the championship but whose time on the field was restricted yesterday because of injury.

Capricornia took out the boys' title with Met North and Met West sharing the girls' honours.
