Behave in wet and slow down

POLICE are warning motorists to back off and behave in the wet weather.

Yesterday, police were kept busy by motorists failing to drive to the road conditions.

A woman and a teenager were rushed to Cairns Base Hospital after a car slid off the road and hit a power pole on Holloways Beach Rd at 7.20pm.

Earlier, two people were taken to hospital after a taxi, car and bicycle collided on the corner of McLeod and Lily streets.

Two others were taken to hospital after a car careered down a bank at the bottom of the Gillies Range at 1.10pm.

Then just 30 minutes later, a 22-year-old man was hit by a car on Trinity Beach Rd and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Far North acting traffic Insp Preben Farbaek said roads had become slippery and motorists risked becoming victims if they failed to heed warnings to slow down.

"We just want people to get from A to B safely," Insp Farbaek said.

"Every time it rains and we have these shower intervals, if motorists don't adjust their driving, we see a slight increase in the number of traffic accidents.

"People need to slow down."

Cairns Police Sen-Constable Cary Coolican said police were issuing traffic infringement notices.

"Motorists should not be surprised if they get a ticket if they have done the wrong thing," Sen-Constable Coolican said.
