Motorcyclist killed
LESS than 48 hours after a double-fatality at Edmonton, a Gordonvale man has lost his life in a motorcycle crash near the town.
The man, in his 40s, died instantly about 5.30pm yesterday after skidding off Little Mulgrave Rd at a bend in the road, sliding for about 100m on a grassy verge before being thrown off the bike.
The latest tragedy follows the death of two men in a horror road smash on the Bruce Highway about 10.15pm on Friday, and brings to 16 the Far North’s official road toll for the year to date.
Yesterday, a box of wilting flowers, a pair of thongs, scattered shards of glass, and a few words written on a rusted pole were all that remained at the site of Friday night’s crash at Edmonton.
Police chalk marks showed the path the early model Holden Statesman took, veering off the highway at Bentley Park about 50m before hitting steel poles that held up a billboard sign.
The names of the men, aged 29 and 30, are yet to be released.
Far North acting traffic Insp Preben Farbaek yesterday said up until Friday’s crash the region’s toll was two below last year’s tally.
Acting Insp Farbaek said the pair were locals who were travelling to a nearby address.
"The information still appears to be fairly consistent that they were travelling at high speed," he said.
"There are also early indications alcohol may have been involved."
Acting Insp Farbaek said statistics showed the vast majority of crash injuries happened when drivers were close to home.
"Familiarity breeds contempt in some cases," he said.
"This crash, by all early indications, was a result of driver behaviour – it could have been avoided.
