The cool waters of Lake Eacham, on the Atherton Tablelands west of Cairns, are a popular swimming and picnic spot for locals and tourists alike.
Surrounded by over 1200 acres of lush rainforest, Lake Eacham is one of the jewels of the Atherton Tablelands.
Scientists believe Lake Eacham, and nearby sister Lake Barrine, were formed approximately 12,000 years ago by volcanic activity.
Hot magma rose from inside the Earth's crust, boiling the underwater water table that existed in the region.
The steam was trapped underground until pressure caused massive explosions, destroying much of the trees, animals and other plant life that existed overhead.
Eventually, the water cooled and we were left with the crater lake that we see today.
These days, Lake Eacham is one of the Tablelands most popular swimming and family destinations.
For the bushwalkers, there is a great 4km walk around the outside of the lake, which is perfect for birdwatchers, hikers or families looking to get an insight into the local ecosystem.
There is also another 1km track which leads to the epic views of the Eacham waterfalls.
The lake also includes a large picnic area with BBQs, making it a great spot for a weekend family lunch.
No motorised boats are allowed on the lake, so it remains quiet and peaceful all year round.
