Third time lucky
The final heat of the timeOUT battle of the bands concert is set to be just as exciting as the first two, writes LAURA STACE
Another six top bands will battle it out this Sunday at Gilligan's to see who will join the four already through to the final.
Minus Penny, One Eye Deer, Approaching Aver and For An Occasion were named winners at the first and second heats and are gearing up to impress again in the big finale on Friday, August 8.
With only two spots up for grabs bands Lakota, Third Ear, Ben Howe, August Redemption, The Medics and The Voids will have to play their best three-song set to date.
Approaching Aver guitarist Jacob Long says their toughest competition in the final will be Minus Penny, and he also predicts The Medics will score a spot alongside them.
His band, which formed at the beginning of the year, has already released a successful first album, All that Matters, and has been added to the line-up for The Black Stump Festival in Sydney later this year.
Long says if his band won the title the biggest plus would be picking the brains of Kisschasy and Faker and asking them about what it is like to be famous.
The guitarist of Kuranda-based grunge rock band For An Occasion, Shane Martin, says he was really impressed by the high standard of the local bands.
His group toured throughout Japan earlier this year and have just released their first self-titled album.
"It would be a great thing to represent Kuranda and give everyone a good show," Martin says.
Don’t forget to collect your tokens from The Cairns Post to get a free ticket to see the Battle of the Bands winner, as well as Faker, Kisschasy, Scribe and Blue King Brown, at the timeOUT concert at the Cairns Showground on August 30.
Another crop of six hopeful bands will rock against each other at the third Battle of the Bands heat this Sunday, August 3, from 5pm at Gilligan's.
