TRINITY Stingers young gun Lewis Short's busy hockey season is about to get a whole lot busier.

Reflecting on the way he plays the game, Short has had to go flat chat this season to keep up with school, club and state representative duties.

He will soon add international competition to his growing resume when he leaves Cairns tomorrow to join Australian schoolboys teammates on a tour of South Africa.

Short, 17, gained selection for the two-week tour after starring for Queensland at last August’s national secondary schoolboys championships in Adelaide and was excited at the prospect of taking his talents overseas.

"I can’t wait to get over there," he said.

"I’ve been told South Africa are pretty good at hockey so it should be good hockey."

The Australian side will play matches against Midland and Coastal composite provincial teams before taking on the South African under-18 team in a three-match series.

Short, whose elder siblings Callan and Katie have represented Queensland with distinction in various men’s and women’s age divisions, said his national debut would be a career highlight.

"It’s been one of my best years with the way I’m going," he said.

Short will return to Cairns in time for the Classic League finals and try to steer Trinity Stingers to the men’s title. He was confident last year’s runner-up would pull out of a mid-season slump and challenge for the premiership title.
