Keeping fit in paradise
Picture perfect: Taking a run on the beach at sunset is a pleasure many Cairns people take for granted.
Keeping healthy and fit is not hard in the Cairns region, with agreeable weather most of the year and many picturesque locations to go for a run, ride or walk.
Taking a morning run along the beach is something many Cairns people take for granted, but doing so in winter for many people in southern centres is nothing but a pipe dream.
Cairns' perfect winter weather means this is possible nearly all year round, making no excuses for people who avoid staying fit and healthy.
The council also supports local fitness with a number of different facilities, many of which are located on the Esplanade in the CBD.
Beach volleyball courts, skate facilities and gym equipment dot the length of the foreshore, making it a fitness lovers paradise.
There is also a network of bike paths and walkways that are used by cyclists, rollerbladers and walkers alike.
Some of the most popular spots for walkers are the Red and Blue Arrow walks, located in the Mount Whitfield Conservation Park in Edge Hill.
Located in close proximity to the Cairns Botanical Gardens, the tracks offer lush rainforest surrounds with a great view from the top (once you get past the stairs!).
Just across the road, Centenary Lakes also offers a number of boardwalks which are popular with both locals and tourists alike.
If you want to take things at your own pace, it is recommended to make the trip during the day, as the Red and Blue Arrow particularly are very popular with the locals before and after working hours.
