Baby Augustine remembered

FOR Anne Storer, 12 years has done little to dull the memories of the day that the baby she calls "little Augustine" was found.

The Hayward St resident recalls the horror of lending her neighbour a sheet to cover up the dismembered child, believed to be no more than 48 hours old, on May 4, 1996.

Every year, to mark the anniversary of the gruesome discovery, she has placed flowers and a cross on the spot where the gruesome discovery was made.

Determined to give the baby a name, she christianed him Augustine.

"It wasn’t right that he was born and died without a name," she said.

"Every time I put the cross out, I promise little Augustine that justice will be served.

"I’m one person who, if the world forgets, I won’t."

Thelma Spelta, who owned the house where the infant was found but moved in two years after the discovery, said the death disturbed the whole neighbourhood.

"It puts goosebumps up my spine just to talk about it," she said.

Both women yesterday were buoyed to hear of the dramatic developments, including the arrest of a 52-year-old woman.
