FAR Northerners have featured prominently in the latest Queensland Building Design Awards announced last week. 

The awards were presented by Deputy Premier Paul Lucas.

Matthew Carley of Indetail won the Custom Designed Homes under 250sq m title. According to judges, his Queenslander-style home adopted a beachside essence and embraced outdoor living.

Mr Carley also won the Project and Special Homes 251 - 350sqm category for his 'Cougar Display Home'.

This included a decked patio area and a fish pond.

Chris Vandyke from received a judges commendation in the Custom Designed Homes 251-350sq m category for designing Riseley Residence.

The home was said to use both Mediterranean and Asian influences.

Meanwhile the award for best Custom Designed Homes over 450sq m went to Chris Vandyke for Mali Mali with its five interconnected pavilions.

Tony Lawson won the award for Residential Alterations and Additions less than $200,000 for work on a Nolan Street kitchen.

Thanks to his design, the kitchen was moved into a lighted area and the TV area moved into a darker place.

Consequently the kitchen and dining areas are said to act as a gathering place with the central bench the key feature.

Judges said the colours and furnishings created "a resort feel to the home, emphasising space and privacy''.

The premier award was won by a Sunshine Coast designer for a residential apartment on the Noosa River.
