BREAKING NEWS: THE woman charged with the murder of a baby in Cairns more than 12 years ago was granted bail in the Supreme Court in Cairns this morning.

Violet Flora Evans, 52, is facing charges of murder, interference with a corpse and concealing a birth.

The dismembered body of the baby, believed to be no more than 48 hours old, was discovered in the front yard of a suburban Cairns home on May 4, 1996.

Ms Evans was deemed not to be a flight risk by Justice Stanley Jones in court this morning, with her bail conditions to include reporting to police each week.

The Cairns Post last week exclusively revealed police forensic officers had set up a crime scene at a Mooroobool house just four doors down from where the baby's body was found.
