The Cairns Post’s photographic editor Marc McCormack found all kinds of wonderful insects in his yard, using a macro lens to get up close and capture their luminescent colours and otherwise unseen features.
Mr McCormack said he was inspired by the newspaper’s Weekender wildlife photo competition, which has already attracted more than 830 entries from keen photographers.
"To look at these creatures up close is so amazing," Mr McCormack said.
Weekender has been inundated with photos in the five categories – butterflies, birds, reptiles, insects and Australian mammals, with bird photos outnumbering insects two to one.
Readers can submit their favourite pictures online at cairns.com.au
by clicking on the Weekender Wildlife Photo Competition icon or post a non-returnable hard copy to Weekender Wildlife Photography Competition, Features Desk, The Cairns Post, PO Box 126, Cairns, 4870.
The winning photographs will feature in a special picture spread in Weekender and be included in a special glossy wildlife poster series.
Entries close on September 5.
