Luxury aboard the Kuranda Scenic Railway's Gold Class.

If you prefer the finer things in life the Kuranda Scenic Railway's Gold Class carriage is the perfect way for you to enjoy Cairns' remarkable outer rainforest, ravines and waterfalls.

For the discerning traveller, Kuranda Scenic Railway's Gold Class carriage offers the ultimate in old-world charm and luxury.

The carriages have been lovingly restored to their former glory and modern conveniences including sumptuous seating and airconditioning have not been overlooked.

Passengers can select from an extensive complimentary beverage list and are treated to delicious local delicacies throughout the journey.

A running commentary detailing the history of the railway provides travellers with an entertaining backdrop for the main event - the jaw-droppingly spectacular scenery of Stoney Creek Falls, the Barron Gorge, Lake Placid and surrounding rainforest.

Regarded as one of the great engineering feats of its time, the Cairns-Kuranda railway was constructed between 1882 and 1891.

Designed to open up the Cairns Highlands to development, hundreds of workers lived and worked under back-breaking conditions with little more than picks and shovels.

With 15 hand-carved tunnels, 37 bridges and 34km of track, the railway cuts an impressive swathe up the mountainside between Freshwater and Myola, to the north of Kuranda.

Set among the lush tropical greenery of Freshwater, the Freshwater Railway Station is also worth a look, where a restored railway worker's cottage and museum provide a snapshot into Cairns' pioneering history.

Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class carriage costs $149 per person; bookings and information available from +61 7 4036 9375.
