Regarded as one of the great engineering feats of its time, the Cairns-Kuranda railway was constructed between 1882 and 1891.
Designed to open up the Cairns Highlands to development, hundreds of workers lived and worked under back-breaking conditions with little more than picks and shovels.
With 15 hand-carved tunnels, 37 bridges and 34km of track, the railway cuts an impressive swathe up the mountainside between Freshwater and Myola, to the north of Kuranda.
Set among the lush tropical greenery of Freshwater, the Freshwater Railway Station is also worth a look, where a restored railway worker's cottage and museum provide a snapshot into Cairns' pioneering history.
Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class carriage costs $149 per person; bookings and information available from +61 7 4036 9375.
