STOPPING youth violence was debated by Far North students yesterday at the Cairns Regional Youth Parliament.

Youth Premier Balawyn Jones joined teenagers from 15 schools across the Far North in the debate inspired by the Just Think campaign - a joint initiative by The Cairns Post and Cairns Taipans.

The campaign's aim is to stamp out drug and alcohol‑fuelled violence in the city by urging revellers to think about their actions.

"Congratulations to The Cairns Post's campaign of Just Think," Legislative Assemble Speaker Mike Reynolds said.

"That's exactly what young people need to do ... they can be killed, can be maimed and they can be in wheelchairs forever."

Ms Jones urged students to join the Just Think campaign.

"I'm really happy that there are new initiatives being brought in to make the youth aware how their actions can have serious consequences," she said.
