Cheeky streak ends abruptly
A CHEEKY streaker who interrupted an AFL Cairns match was collared by the long arm of the law when police later found him on a nearby street corner.
A 24-year-old Kewarra Beach man has been charged with being a public nuisance after allegedly running naked on to the field during a match at Crathern Park on Saturday.
The incident occurred in the first half, with home side Centrals Trinity being spanked by Cairns Saints.
A witness said the man was egged on by mates at the western end of the ground before he jumped the fence and ran to the centre square.
He then ran to the southern boundary fence and left the ground.
He was later caught by police called to investigate complaints of 20 to 30 people drinking and creating a disturbance at the corner of nearby Nautilus St and Trinity Beach Rd.
The alleged streaker is expected to appear in Cairns Magistrates’ Court on September 1.
Police crime prevention co-ordinator Cary Coolican said streaking would not be tolerated.
"Police are concerned about any public nuisance behaviour that interferes with people’s enjoyment," she said.
There were no arrests relating to the complaints about drinking and creating a disturbance.
The Cairns Post received text messages from people in the crowd praising police for their actions.
AFL Cairns operations manager Melissa Dunstan declined to comment until there was "some more investigation".
AFL Cairns president Russell Beer said streakers were "not a major issue" at local footy.
There also were streaking incidents at the 2007 AFL Cairns grand final, the Round 21 clash between Centrals Trinity and South Cairns at Crathern Park last year, the 2007 Cairns hockey final and the recent one-day cricket match between Queensland and New Zealand at Cazalys.
