PAT Morrish will today hang up her headphones and walk away from the microphone, putting an end to a 26-year career in radio.

The distinctive voice of the ABC Radio Far North broadcaster has started the morning for thousands of listeners for the past 10 years.

But from 11am today, Ms Morrish will be walking out of the studio for the last time and embarking on a retirement that will include caravanning around the country with her husband, Bob, and dog, Grinchy.

"The first thing I am going to do is pump up my wheels on my bike and sell my car," Ms Morrish said. "Then come October for four or five months we are going to go off in the caravan with the dog."

Ms Morrish started her radio career in August 1982, moving around in various roles within the ABC in Cairns and also working as the sole reporter for 4AM for four years before nabbing the morning show presenter position.

She said finding something to talk about on the radio every day was simple, given the interesting people she was able to talk to.
