THE wait is finally over for thousands of music fans as Cairns Showground hosts the annual timeOUT concert today.

Organisers are expecting more than 11,000 people to walk through the gates from 3pm to see almost five hours of live music from five awesome acts.

Local band The Medics kick off about 4pm, followed by Sydney rockers Faker at 5.10pm, then reggae outfit Blue King Brown, Melbourne punk rock band Kisschasy and last of all Kiwi hip-hopper Scribe.

timeOUT editor Vaughan Mayberry said today's concert should be bigger and better than last year's event at Cannon Park racecourse.

"We've already given away or pre-sold a record number of tickets for today's concert which is an indication of how good the line-up is this year," Mr Mayberry said.

"The weather should be perfect, the line-up is awesome ... it's going to rock."

Organisers urged concert-goers to take ID because it is a licensed event and alcohol will only be served to those with a proof of age wrist band.

Alcohol, open drinks, food and recording devices are not permitted into the concert.

Free water is available throughout the day and there will be food and market stalls onsite.

Police warned a drug dog would be patrolling outside the concert to sniff out any troublemakers.

"It's purely there from a safety point of view," acting Sen-Sgt Chris Hodgman told The Weekend Post.

Last-minute tickets are available at the gate for $60.
