VIDEO: A sodden four wheel drive has its wheels firmly back on dry ground after being hauled by crane out of a Cairns backpacker resort pool yesterday.
A pen, a few CDs and a layer of oil were the only signs that a car had crash landed in the pool, narrowly missing backpackers who were playing beach volleyball and swimming.
A 16-tonne crane lifted the vehicle out of the pool, over trees and a fence and on to the road about 4.30pm yesterday.
Witnesses said the vehicle had roared its way along Digger St before coming to a stop near the pool fence of the Serpent Hostel and Bar on Sunday.
"It roared and roared and then it went straight over the kerb and through the fence," neighbour Ken Bolderston said.
"I thought it was going to blow up."
Cairns police said a mechanical malfunction appeared to have caused the accident, but investigations were continuing.
The 28-year-old driver, who leapt out of the car before it plunged into the pool, was not injured.
