The Cairns region has numerous island paradises that make perfect romantic weekend getaways for couples looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Two of the most exclusive places to visit are Lizard Island, a resort off the coast of Cooktown that is popular with the rich-and-famous and Bedarra Island, an eco-resort south of Cairns with its limited number of guests, no children policy and VIP visitors.

Right next door is Dunk Island is slightly more family friendly, but still has a range of accommodation and dining options to keep even the most disconcerning couples happy.

Even further south is Hinchinbrook Island which offers camping holiday options or an eco resort that only holds 50 guests at a time, making it perfect for seclusion with a touch of nature thrown in.

Also close to Cairns is Double Island just off the coast of Palm Cove.

Double Island is available for hire and has played host to a number of celebrities including Keanu Reeves.

North of Cairns and just off the coast of Port Douglas is the interesting day trip destination of Low Isles.

Home to a lighthouse and a nesting site for seabirds, Low Isles offer great snorkelling and diving but as a marine national park, fishing is not allowed in the lagoon on the main island.

This might be an option for those looking for just a nice day out with a picnic lunch.
