Campaign wins praise in Canberra
DRINKING too much alcohol will at best only lead to embarrassment and at worst a fatal accident, says Leichhardt MP Jim Turnour.
Mr Turnour yesterday spoke about the dangers of drinking and the merits of The Cairns Post's Just Think campaign during a sitting of Federal Parliament in Canberra.
"Sadly, alcohol if consumed in excess, can unleash pent-up emotions or simply remove common sense," Mr Turnour said.
"The campaign is focused fairly and squarely at getting people to just think about their drinking and what it might mean, not only to themselves but to others."
The Cairns Post and Cairns Taipans basketballers Martin Cattalini, Aaron Grabau and Kerry Williams have joined forces to spread the message: "We’re not saying don’t drink, just think."

Mr Turnour said he had also taken the opportunity to speak to Health and Ageing Minister Nicola Roxon about the campaign.
"I am pleased to lend my support to the Just Think campaign of my local paper, The Cairns Post," Mr Turnour told his parliamentary colleagues.
"The campaign fits well with the Rudd Government's new national strategy to combat binge drinking.
"Working together we can combat irresponsible drinking and by doing so we can not only save lives but repair relationships and build stronger families and communities.
"It is encumbent on us all to drink responsibly and encourage our family and friends so that as a community and nation we develop a more responsible drinking culture.
"I want to congratulate The Cairns Post."
