Putting quality in the phone picture
Manufacturers have answered the call for better mobile phone cameras, writes STEPHEN FENECH
A NEW generation of devices is emerging that has raised the bar in image quality, delivering pictures not far behind those produced on dedicated digital cameras.
LG VIEWTY
LG’S Viewty (top image) looks as much like a camera as it does a mobile.
And as with a digital camera, there are features such as image stabilisation, flash and auto focus on board.
The 5-megapixel device can also shoot videos which can then be uploaded to YouTube for the whole world to see.
Another fun, but not very practical, feature is the mode where users can capture video at 120 frames per second and then play it back in superslow motion.
It is priced at $899 and available by calling 1800 638 080.
SAMSUNG G800
The Samsung G800 is a bulkier handset but its credentials as a camera are fairly solid with 5-megapixel resolution and a Xenon flash.
On board is 3x optical inner zoom offering the best zoom seen on a handset.
There’s also face detection and a handy tool for editing video.
Its metal construction means it’s a durable product that can go practically anywhere.
It is priced at $799. Call 1300 362 603 for info.
NOKIA 6220
This little pocket rocket has 3G HDSPA connectivity, assisted GPS and is also one of the best 5-megapixel mobile cameras on the market.
The 6220 captures vibrant images thanks to the Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and Xenon flash.
But apart from just capturing good pictures, the Nokia 6220 can also let you show them to the world.
It’s also possible to geotag images, showing on a map the precise location where they were taken.
It is priced at $699 and available by calling Nokia on 1300 366 733.
SONY ERICSSON C902
At first glance users can’t even see the lens of the 5-megapixel camera on the Sony Ericsson C902.
It is hidden away by a slide that pops out behind the screen to expose the camera and the flash.
Users will find auto focus and macro modes, image stabilisation and face detection.
The quality of images the C902 captures are excellent with good colour and contrast.
It is priced at $899 and available by calling Sony Ericsson on 1300 650 050.
LG SECRET (KF750)
LG’S Secret (bottom image) has it in the looks department thanks to its svelte slider design and the good news is it also delivers on the camera front.
The 5-megapixel camera on the phone can produce quite respectable images and video which can all be edited within the device.
Videos can also be uploaded from the phone to YouTube.
It is priced at $899 and available by calling 1800 638 080.
SAMSUNG U900
The recently released Samsung U900 is a sturdy all-round mobile that offers users high quality features across the board.
And while the adaptive touch panel on the front of the device caught our eye, one of the better features we found was the 5-megapixel camera.
Once the camera is activated, the adaptive touch screen, which effectively has replaced the five way nav-key, comes into play to allow the user to control flash, self-timers, exposure and macro settings.
It is priced at $849 and available by calling 1300 362 603.
