Deals abound
CAIRNS Regional Council knows a good deal when it sees one.
CEC has since sold the land to Korean company KT Corporation which plans to build a hotel on the site. While it is putting its plans together, KT Corporation has agreed to a new 12-month lease to the council on the same $1 a year terms.
Coming down
FOR the past five or six years, huge cranes have dominated the Cairns CBD skyline as one big building after another has climbed from the ground up. The completion of the Hedley Group's Centrepoint project in Abbott St in a month will leave only one high-rise under construction and with the unlikely prospect of any more in the near future, the Meccano-like giants may be put back in their boxes for a while.
Gay club, so what?
WHILE there has been quite a bit said both in support and against on the news the city's gay club, Head Office, is on the move and has been approved by Cairns Regional Council, there is another side to it.
Several people have been in contact to say the club gets excellent write-ups in travel journals in Hong Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila and Pattaya to name a few Asian cities . As well, one correspondent said it "does not discriminate against local people either, making all races welcome no matter the colour of the skin''. Sounds like positive tourism promotion.
Prize limits
SKYTRANS, major sponsor of the Cairns Taipans, has regularly given away flights as part of its match-night promotion. However, there were a few strings attached to the latest ticket drop where the winner could take a return to Cooktown. With Skytrans dropping its Wednesday and Saturday flights to the far northern outpost, the winner has to take his/her prize on a weekday. Still, a day off work is probably worth it.
