Forensic thriller
CAIRNS BOOK REVIEW: Keeping the Dead by Tess Gerritsen (Bantam Press)
Gerritsen brings readers another in her renowned Maura Isles series of forensic pathology thrillers.
In Keeping the Dead, Maura is about to take part in the x-ray of an actual mummy discovered in the basement of a local museum.
Naturally enough it can’t be an ordinary mummy; not after the x-ray shows the body with a bullet in its leg.
The case is moved to homicide and Maura is joined by detective Jane Rizzoli in the hunt for a murdered.
Before too long more bodies start showing up, all of them somehow preserved using ancient techniques.
Gerritsen’s skill comes in translating the science and adding depth to her characters with each novel.
The pace is fast, the plots nice and twisty, there’s background stories and good dialogue.
All in all, Keeping the Dead is another quality forensic thriller.
Verdict: Fans will love it as will lovers of murder mysteries.
