Crema rises to top
It was a case of Crema rising to the top for the second year running in a drama-charged final round of the Marlin Coast Classic Fours event at the Marlin Bowls Club.
Spectators witnessed many enthralling battles in the closest result in the 11-year history of the tournament.
Entering the final and fifth game of the tournament 10 of the 16 teams were still in with a chance of taking home prize money.
The Dimbulah team skipped by reigning champion Elio Crema and the Marlin Coast team skipped by Neil Whiteford led on 10 points.
But Sellwood, Herwig (Marlin Coast) and Yelavich (Cairns) were waiting close behind on nine points.
Four teams got off to flyers on Saturday with Herwig upsetting Yelavich.
Game three saw Whiteford outlast the fellow Marlin Coast team skipped by Bob Smith by one shot.
Sellwood was progressing well with a team made up of two of the club juniors in Ben Moore (19) and Shane Phillips (15) and Australian disabled champion Steve Lockey.
The team led after day one on aggregate from Herwig and Crema which were undefeated.
Sunday saw a titanic struggle between Sellwood and the Mareeba team of Ciobo and Whiteford and Crema.
Crema and Ciobo both started the last end needing three-shot wins to claim victory.
Ciobo got them but Crema could only manage two shots for a draw.
The final game of the tournament matched the leading teams of Crema and White-
ford against McInerney and Sellwood respectively.
Whiteford beat Sellwood by one shot but Crema defeated McInerney by nine to take out the tournament by three shots.
The Crema team, which included Aldo Dezen, Rob Stahmer and Joe Milicevic were thrilled with the win.
Final results: Crema 13-85, Whiteford 13-82, Yelavich 12-84, Herwig 12-81, Sellwood 9-87, Catelan 9-84, Scott 9-81, Hare 6-89, Ciobo 6-77, Hanson 6-76, Blinky 6-71, Jumeau 6-65, Tiroboschi 3-76, Ashton 3-64, Adair 3-58, McInerney 3-57.
