CAIRNS is continuing to build its tourism links with the US Pacific island territory of Guam.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland's Lisa Monks and three dancers from the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park took the region's attractions to the Micronesian Island Fair as well as the US Navy and Airforce Travel Fairs during October.

This followed up on a visit to Cairns in September by a group of Continental Airlines holiday agents who learned about the holiday experiences in the region and held workshops with local tourism operators.

TTNQ also arranged a live broadcast from Cairns by Guam's K57 morning radio host Ray Gibson and later this month Continental Airlines will bring a TV film crew from Guam to the region to film segments on family holidays, tropical gardening and spa and indulgence travel for a travel and lifestyle program, to be screened in 2009.

Guam is seen as a potential major market for Cairns in coming years with the US expanding tis military presence to 25,000 by 2013.

The with cairns just four hours from Guam, it is seen as a perfect destination for the US servicemen and women and their families to visit for leave.

Continental and Guam are also seen as providing an alternative link to Cairns for Japanese tourists who are the island's major visitors.
