Power cut to 300 businesses
ERGON Energy will investigate an underground cable fault that cut power to traffic lights and almost 300 businesses in the CBD yesterday afternoon.
The cable, near Tropical Arcade on Shields St, was removed to be assessed after it malfunctioned about 3.45pm.
Power was fully restored by 5.10pm. Meanwhile, Ergon Energy received 22 reports of electric shocks in the Far North region during the 12 months to August, and is worried about complacency. According to the company:
- 16 people received shocks relating to damaged power outlets, switches and faulty appliances;
- 5 people were hurt in incidents involving water or wet hands;
- 1 person was hurt in an incident involving damaged leads or cords.
By comparison there were 27 incidents in North Queensland (based on Townsville).
Spokeswoman Gaylene Whenmouth said electrical work had to be done by licensed contractors.
