TWO men have been arrested and police are hunting a third after a dramatic siege in central Cairns.

Heavily-armed officers rushed to a unit in Mayers St, Manunda, about 3.30pm after reports a man carrying two axes was threatening residents.

People living in the unit and other nearby properties were evacuated and nearby streets have been cordoned off.

At about 4.25pm police approached the unit with their guns drawn and spoke to two of the men. They were arrested soon after.

Officers are still chasing a third man, who is aged in his 20s.

It is believed the siege was sparked by a fight between the occupants of the unit.
