Snake tastes cocka-two

WATCHING a python engulf a wild cockatoo in its jaws should be a one-off but astonished Clifton Beach woman Cindy Lane has a particularly greedy snake in her patch.

Nine days after witnessing a python eating a sulphur-crested cockatoo in her bougainvillea tree, Ms Lane saw a rerun on Saturday after hearing squawking coming from the back yard about 9pm.

"The poor cockatoo was writhing around with the python coiling itself around him," Ms Lane said.

Squirting the snake with a garden hose did nothing.

"They were up the bougainvillea tree, only about 1.5m off the ground this time, and he was hanging by the tip of his tail but he wasn't letting go of anything," she said yesterday.

"I couldn't believe my eyes, particularly because it had only just happened before."

The Clifton Beach artist doesn't know if it was the same snake.

"I can't quite believe it would go for another cockie that quick," she said of the nine-day hiatus between incidents.

"It was horrible to watch, but at the same time quite mesmerising."
