One Mc-unhappy meal to go

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

A SCOTTISH tourist who flew into a McRage and threw an EFTPOS machine at a McDonald's manager because he couldn't order what he wanted has been fined $500.

Andrew Hamish Deans, 20, from Edinburgh, pleaded guilty in Cairns Magistrates' Court yesterday to a public nuisance offence.

The court heard he and two friends went to the McDonald's on the Cairns Esplanade about 5am on October 5 and when they were told that only the breakfast menu was on offer, they became angry and aggressive toward the staff.

When the manager intervened, Deans threw the EFTPOS machine at his head, causing a small cut.

Deans' defence solicitor John Magoffin said his client acknowledged his behaviour was unacceptable.

Mr Magoffin said the manager swore at the group and knocked his friend's credit cards on to the floor before his client threw the EFTPOS machine.

He said Deans co-operated with police at all times and agreed he had no excuse for the offence.

Mr Magoffin asked that no conviction be recorded because his client was on a working holiday visa and hoped to remain in the country for another 12 months.

Magistrate Joe Pinder said McDonald's staff had enough difficulties dealing with drunks in the early hours of the morning without being assaulted.

He fined Deans and did not record a conviction.

I do not want fries with that: Andrew Hamish Deans outside court yesterday.
